Larry Nickel
67, MaleA retired General Motors worker and widower whose progressive values are being tested by a rapidly changing society. Opinionated, stubborn and not nearly as adaptable as he once believed.

“The world keeps changing. Larry Nickel would appreciate it if someone would explain the rules.”
Larry Nickel is 67, recently retired, widowed and increasingly bewildered by a world that seems determined to reinvent itself overnight. A lifelong progressive who thought he understood tolerance and social change, Larry discovers that keeping up with a new generation is considerably harder than he imagined.
When tensions within his community theatre circle bring him face-to-face with younger people whose language, identities and expectations challenge his assumptions, Larry finds himself navigating unfamiliar territory. His longtime friend Chuck offers a mixture of common sense and comic relief, while his university-student grandson Mark and fellow cast member Jordan challenge Larry's assumptions and refuse to let him retreat comfortably into the past.
Funny, provocative and ultimately warm-hearted, Too Old for TikTok explores generational conflict, political correctness, friendship and family. Beneath the laughter lies a simple question: Can an old dog learn new tricks—or must the younger generation learn a little patience, too?

Larry's neighbour and closest friend of nearly forty years. A retired mechanic, British-born, quick-witted and considerably more comfortable with modern social changes than Larry.
Larry's grandson and a Queen's University student. Intelligent, articulate and politically engaged, Mark respects his grandfather but isn't afraid to challenge his thinking.
A passionate university student with strong convictions about language, identity and social justice. Confident and outspoken, though still discovering their own place in the world.

An upbeat, friendly man with an Indian accent. Recorded voice only.
The entire play takes place in the backyard of Larry Nickel's modest, slightly weathered home in Oshawa, Ontario, in late June 2025, during Pride Month.
The setting features a cheerful yellow house with white trim, a kitchen window and back door, a picket fence, mismatched patio furniture and an electric lawn mower. A Montreal Canadiens towel draped over the fence adds a distinctly Canadian touch.
The single set can be adapted to accommodate theatres of different sizes and technical capabilities, making the play particularly suitable for community and amateur productions.
Amateur and community performance rights are administered through the Playwrights Guild of Canada.
Professional performance rights are handled directly by Gideon Heath.
